Located in the northernmost part of Spain, this city has its own special Navarrese character, with ancient mediaeval traditions and its characteristic festivities that feature bull running and bullfights.
The San Fermin celebrations are perhaps the most exceptional, impressive aspect of Pamplona, the capital of Navarra province.
On a walk through Pamplona, unusual, emblematic monuments and squares can be admired such as the Plaza del Castillo, considered the heart of the city.
Around it are a variety of monuments that are well worth a visit, such as the Monument to the Charters of Navarre, erected in 1903 by popular subscription as an allegory to justice, history, independence, peace and work. Another monument of note is the Cámara de Comptos, a charming fourteenth-century Gothic house that was used as the Mint and Accounts Tribunal of the Kingdom of Navarre.
The Burghs
San Cenín, Navarrerias and San Nicolás were three separate boroughs which made up the historic centre of the city and were at war with each other for years, until in September 1423 Charles III, the King of Navarre, issued the privilege of the Union, a charter that united the three towns and brought peace and prosperity to the city.
The churches belonging to each of the burghs deserve a special mention: San Cenín, Gothic in style and dating from the thirteenth century; San Nicolás, built in transitional style; and Santo Domingo, a sixteenth-century late Gothic style construction.
In the Plaza de los Burgos square the Town Hall can be admired. It is one of the city¿s most characteristic monuments, with an interesting Baroque façade. The Church of San Saturnino stands right beside it.
Food & Beverages
Geographically and climatologically, the area is extremely varied, so we will give a description of the most famous and best-loved recipes of each of its different regions:
The highly-valued Bidasoa salmon is caught in the area's rivers, and another popular fish recipe is trout with smoked ham. In the Mid-Navarra area Sangüesa beans are a speciality, and in the Estella area the roast lamb and kid are excellent, as is the lamb stew.
In the La Ribera area the vegetables are of note, together with the piquillo peppers, asparagus, Tudela lettuce hearts and ajoarriero (cod stew with red peppers).
