Puerto Plata is really clean and orderly, more than other Dominican towns. The San Felipe Apóstol Cathedral, in the art deco style, rises in the heart of town. Adjoining the cathedral you will find Parque de la Independencia, a nice park that makes locals feel proud.

Sosúa used to be a small and quiet fishing village before hotels and resorts began to be developed in the area, some fifteen years ago. Currently, Sosúa is one of the most visited tourist sites on the island.Sosúa is an exceptional place for scuba diving, snorkelling, and underwater swimming, as its coral reefs create optimal conditions to engage in these popular recreational activities. The town comprises two distinct neighbourhoods Los Charamicos and El Batey, separated by an extensive bay of golden sand.

Many Dominicans live in Los Chamaricos, having come here to work in the travel and tourism industry. This is an area with lots of shops and restaurants serving traditional dishes, mostly prepared with delicious fresh fish.

In the Dominican Republic, there is a great variety of delicious foods even for those with a discerning palate. Despite being a mixture of Taíno, African and Spanish gastronomies, traditional recipes are simple and not too spicy. Native ingredients include chilli and "bija" (both used as spices), sweet potatoes, cassava, beans, and corn. Amongst African products there are pigeon peas, pepper, and yam, while the Spaniards have added rice, carrots, sugar, onions, and coffee.

Puerto Plata lies between the mountains and the sea, lapped by the calm Caribbean water. One of the best ways of getting around is horse riding, which resort guests can do only 20km from the resort.
