The centuries of history, art and knowledge that have made Salamanca a universal city can be felt as you stroll through its streets. Come and find out all that's on offer in a town made famous by its students.
Salamanca is known as the city of thought and knowledge, but it is also brimming with art and beauty. Its historic centre, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, has a magnificent monumental legacy with outstanding architectural examples in numerous different styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Plateresque¿ The University, apart from being one of the oldest in Europe, is one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in Spain.
The House of Shells
The Casa de las Conchas or House of Shells is Gothic in style. Its construction began in the late fifteenth century, although it also includes some Renaissance and Mudejar elements. It is a prime example of the so-called Isabelline architecture.
This civic building attracts the visitor¿s attention as its façade is covered in over three hundred stone shells. Due to cracks appearing in its structure in the eighteenth century, the top of the building was remodelled, which is the reason why there are no shells in the upper part. It has an impressive main door, presided by a Gothic coat of arms bearing fleurs-de-lys.
Today it houses Salamanca¿s Public Library and an information office.
The Cathedral
When we talk about Salamanca¿s Cathedral we are actually referring to two cathedrals joined together: the Old Cathedral, which dates back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and the New Cathedral, built in the sixteenth century.
The Old Cathedral is Romanesque in style and one of its most fascinating features is the Torre del Gallo or `Cock Tower¿. The New Cathedral, whose construction began in the sixteenth century and was completed by Churriguera in the eighteenth century, is famous for the choir pews designed by Joaquín Churriguera in 1727. Its Baroque choir stalls are also of great beauty, and bear Renaissance images such as those of Our Lady of Loreto and St. John the Baptist.
Escuelas Mayores
